What hikers ask us most before the trek.
Pico dos Marins is in the Mantiqueira Mountains, in the town of Piquete, São Paulo state, close to the border with Minas Gerais. It rises to about 2,420 metres (7,940 feet).
The classic trek takes two days, with a night camping on the mountain and the summit at sunrise. Very fit hikers sometimes do it in one long day, but camping is the best way to enjoy it.
It is a demanding trek with steep climbs and sections over rock, so good fitness is needed. No technical climbing experience is required when you go with an experienced local guide.
The drier season, from April to October, is the best time. Winter nights on the mountain are cold and can drop close to or below freezing, so bring warm layers.
